Description

The Nissan NPTi 90 #83 is one of the most significant surviving examples of Nissan’s championship-winning IMSA GTP programme. Built as chassis 90-03 by Nissan Performance Technology Inc., the car formed part of the factory team’s assault on the IMSA Camel GTP Championship during the early 1990s. It was developed as the successor to the hugely successful Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo and incorporated major advances in aerodynamics, chassis design, and engine performance, helping Nissan maintain its position at the forefront of North American prototype racing.

The NPT-90 was built around a lightweight aluminium honeycomb monocoque clothed in composite bodywork shaped to maximise ground-effect downforce. Deep Venturi tunnels, carefully sculpted sidepods, and refined aerodynamic surfaces generated exceptional cornering grip while maintaining impressive straight-line speed. This combination made the NPT-90 one of the most technically advanced IMSA GTP cars of its era.

Power came from Nissan’s formidable 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged VG30 V6 engine, producing between 750 and 900 horsepower in race trim. Coupled to a Hewland five-speed transaxle and sophisticated suspension, the package delivered blistering acceleration, outstanding reliability, and superb handling. These qualities enabled Nissan to secure multiple manufacturers’ championships and cemented the NPT-90’s reputation as one of the finest IMSA GTP prototypes ever built.

Chassis 90-03, raced as #83, enjoyed a notable competition career. After serving in Nissan’s factory programme, it was sold to Momo Racing for the 1993 IMSA season, where it continued to demonstrate its competitiveness with podium finishes against newer machinery. Its continued success highlighted the durability and engineering excellence of the NPT-90 design.

Today, Nissan NPTi 90 #83 is regarded as one of the landmark cars of the IMSA GTP era. With its immense turbocharged power, sophisticated aerodynamics, and championship pedigree, it remains an enduring symbol of one of the greatest periods in North American sports prototype racing.
