Description

The Spice SE90P #09 GTP was a purpose-built IMSA Camel GTP endurance racing prototype developed by Spice Engineering during the early 1990s. Designed specifically for North American sports car racing, the SE90P combined lightweight construction, aerodynamic efficiency, and robust V8 power to create a competitive customer race car capable of challenging some of the strongest factory-backed teams in IMSA competition.

Built around an aluminium honeycomb and carbon-composite monocoque chassis, the SE90P featured an open-cockpit design optimised for endurance racing conditions and IMSA regulations. The aerodynamic bodywork incorporated low-drag principles and carefully sculpted airflow management to maximise high-speed stability and cornering performance. The car’s compact proportions and lightweight structure gave it agile handling characteristics, particularly on technical circuits and during long-distance events.

Powering the SE90P were various naturally aspirated V8 engines depending on team and race specification, most commonly Chevrolet or Pontiac-derived units producing between 650 and 700 horsepower. The strong and reliable American V8 powerplants offered excellent endurance durability and broad torque delivery, making the car highly suited to the demands of IMSA competition. A five-speed manual racing gearbox transferred power to the rear wheels, while double wishbone suspension with pushrod-operated dampers allowed teams to precisely tune the chassis for different circuits and conditions.

As car number 09, the Spice SE90P competed during one of the most competitive periods in IMSA history, facing legendary rivals such as the Nissan NPT-90, Toyota Eagle MkIII, Jaguar XJR series, and Porsche 962. Although customer teams often operated with significantly smaller budgets than the major manufacturers, the SE90P earned a reputation for solid engineering, adaptability, and dependable endurance racing performance.

Today, the Spice SE90P #09 remains an important example of the golden era of IMSA GTP racing. Its combination of aggressive styling, V8-powered performance, and privateer racing spirit continues to make it a respected and admired prototype among historic motorsport enthusiasts and endurance racing fans worldwide.
